Create a WorkBuddy Skill: the SKILL.md primer
A skill is just a folder whose core is a SKILL.md file (YAML frontmatter + Markdown body), plus optional scripts. The agent matches tasks against the description and loads the skill when relevant. SKILL.md is an open, cross-agent standard — the same folder works in Claude Code, OpenClaw and other compatible agents.
Minimal working example
---
name: excel-helper
description: Handle spreadsheet tasks: merge workbooks, clean data,
build pivot summaries. Use when the user mentions Excel/sheets.
---
# Excel Helper
1. Read the target workbook, confirm columns and row count first
2. Process (merge / clean / pivot) as requested
3. Save results to a new file and report a change summary The description is 80% of the job
- Write when to use it, not what it is — use the verbs users actually type
- Bury trigger words: words in the user's task should appear in your description
- Set boundaries: state what it does not do to avoid misfires
Ship checklist
- name matches the folder name
- description carries 3+ natural trigger words
- destructive actions require confirmation or backups
- tested with 3 different phrasings in a fresh session
